Herkimer diamonds are quartz crystals first discovered within exposed dolomite in the late 18th century by geologists in Herkimer County, New York and the Mohawk River Valley. They aren't actually diamonds but are called that because of their clarity and well-formed faces. Here, bezel-wrapped Herkimer stones are shown to their best advantage by swinging along hand-formed wire earrings. The pointedness of the quartz is offset by the smoothness of the gold.
